Choosing a Chemicals major at S.I.T. (Admissions Office)

Quests

Now that you've proven your worth as a garbage disposer, it's time to do some alchemy. The alchemy book's pages are too stiff to turn.

  • Make a vial of vellum softener (2112).
  • Apply it to the book to learn that the third hopper's symbol means arsenic.
  • Ask professor Gilbert about the missing arsenic.
  • Travel to Hilbert House.
  • Find the jar of arsenic in room 3A.

Return to the lab.

  • Make a vial of bronze revivifier (3132).
  • Use it on the statue of Dr. Ambrose Adams just outside the classroom.

Professor Adams is now your companion.

  • Check the lab equipment again. Adams fills in a missing symbol in the book.
  • Check the book to learn the fourth reagent: lithium.

Ask professor Gilbert about the missing lithium to learn about the Old Relaxa-Cola Factory in Ocean City.

  • Go there and defeat the combination lock with 6ish in your main stat (or the combination, 7153).
  • Return with a bag of loose lithium and add it to the last hopper.
  • Make a vial of chrome polish (4123) and show it to the professor to finish the quest.

Interactions

Inside the Chemicals Building

  • A bronze statue of Dr. Ambrose Adams, founder of the Chemicals department.
  • Leave a chemical, take a chemical. Take any basic crafting ingredient from the shelf and leave another in its place.
  • A lab bench.

Chemicals Classroom

You can experiment all you like with the equipment. You can pour your unwanted brews down the drain immediately, or use them in your inventory to get rid of them later.

Using the equipment prompts you to choose a hopper four times, then you get a vial of some alchemical substance.

  • Your first two choices determine the kind of material your concoction will supposedly act upon.
  • The last two choices determine what it does to that material.

For example, 1, 1 corresponds to the material bologna, while 2, 1 is the process of straightening. So choosing 1121 creates a "vial of bologna straightener".

Only two of the chemical options (1–mercury and 2–lead) are available at first. You'll find the other two (3–arsenic and 4–lithium) as you progress in this quest.

Note that most of the 256 possible alchemical vials have no use.
