Wandering in Gray County |
“ | Look at you! You are soaked to the bone from the rain! Quick, you must make yourself warm. There is hot spaghetti on the stove and towels in my wardrobe. | „ |
Seek shelter from the frigid and driving rain in the Borge House. Meet Farmer Borge and his daughter. Try not to ruin everything.
Quests
You have your choice of reward depending on how you navigate this place:
- 20 , 50 , and you destroy the house.
- A farmer's daughter's necklace and you destroy the house.
- A farm towel and you can leave safely. Or destroy the house anyway, if you feel like it.
- You destroy the house for nothing. Which probably already happened, which is why you're reading this page to begin with.
See the sections below for a walkthrough.

Outside
Interior
- Search the side table to find nothing.
- Talk to Farmer Borge.
- You can ask him for sugar and get a 150-lb bag of sugar.
- He warns you that you must not look at his daughter.
Warning: He's not kidding. Starting now, if you look to the left — even for one single instant — the entire house is destroyed and you can not get it back.
- Scout's Honor: "You don't have to worry about me."
- Checkered Past: "Oh no, I've been down this road before."
- FOOTS ring: "Heh, ever seen one of these?"
Proceed forward carefully. You can enter the bathroom, but there's nothing to do in there just now, and you're likely to get stuck and have to look at the girl.
- Find a baby bottle in the kitchen.
- You can splash some water on your face.
- Find a strand of spaghetti in the pot. Don't mash E. Don't look at her.
- Feel free to look at a picture of the daughter and her family.
- Enter the door to the daughter's bedroom.
If you go past the door instead, which will force you to look at the girl, you can drink from the barrels with the baby bottle.
- The first barrel is undrinkable.
- The second barrel earns you 20 due to strong, healthy bones.
- You drop the bottle into the third barrel and recover 50 .
You can also look at the bookshelf, again, damning the house to oblivion:
Candles on a bookshelf is a recipe for disaster. Coincidentally, the title of one of the cookbooks is Recipes for Disaster Scenarios.
Daughter's Room
- You can check the jewelry box to the right, if you want to destroy the house immediately after. Find the farmer's daughter's necklace.
- Might as well look in the mirror too, since you've doomed the place anyway. This isn't a mirror you can change your expression in, though.
- Move just to the right of the dressing screen and up to the armoire.
- Try to light the lamp, then open it and find a lamp key.
- Behind the screen, you can safely turn to the left. Once you come out from behind it, of course, looking to the right will now destroy the house.
Move on to the bathroom.
Bathroom
- You can splash some water on your face at the wash basin.
It's possible to leave through the foyer and even re-enter the house and resume your exploration. Let's assume you stay here, though.
- A bust of Michelangelo's David. Knock it over and find a thin key.
- Unlock the door with the two keys (or the cursed key). Move on to the farmer's bedroom.
Father's Room
- You can have a strange converstion on the phone.
- Search the bed and steal a bottle of farmer's amaro.
- Examine the dresser. The daughter speaks up.
For the first time, you can safely look at her. It's not clear why.
- Turn around and talk to her.
- Take the daughter's key from the chain on her neck. (Or don't, if you feel like using your cursed key instead.)
- Poke around the room if you want.
- Take the farm towel from the dresser. It is an exceptionally good towel. You have never seen its like. The girl warns you not to look at her father.
Warning: Farmer Borge jumpscare! If you turn to the right, you will look at him and destroy the house.
- Unlock the door and make your way out.
Trying again with the power of save file editing
If you're playing on PC and you want to have another try at the house, you can edit your save file.
It's a good idea to make a copy of the save file first, in case things get messed up.
If any of this is confusing, consider not trying it at all. You can easily lose your playthrough.
Quick retry
If you get stuck but haven't destroyed the house yet, try this:
- Exit to the main menu. (If you exit the game completely, Steam Cloud may undo your changes when you start it again.)
- Locate your Shadows over Loathing save file and open it in your favorite text editor, which is of course Notepad++.
- At the bottom of the file, find a line that looks something like
"WAA_ID": "daughterhouse_main,1417,31,right"
. Change it to:"WAA_ID": "daughterhouse"
Save the file and continue your game. You're outside the house and can pick up from where you left off.
Rebuild the house
- Exit to the main menu and open your save file.
- Press ctrl+F to search for flags with
daughterhouse
in their name. - Change
"map5_icon_daughterhouse": "mapicon_daughterhouse_alt",
to:"map5_icon_daughterhouse": "mapicon_daughterhouse",
- Change
"map5_name_daughterhouse": "Distinct Lack of a House",
to:"map5_name_daughterhouse": "Borge House",
- Find
"daughterhouse_failed": "1"
and"daughterhouse_complete": "1"
and change each"1"
to"0"
- As above, change the
WAA_ID
line at the bottom to:"WAA_ID": "daughterhouse"
Save the file and continue the game. Everything in the house should be as before it was destroyed.
Full Reset
- Main menu, open save file, ctrl+F
daughterhouse
- Change the same values as above, including
"WAA_ID": "daughterhouse"
- Also change a whole slew of integer flags such as:
"daughterhouse_frontdoor": "2",
"daughterhouse_main_farmerP2": "1",
"daughterhouse_bedroom2_visited": "1",
- And so on. Anything with
daughterhouse
in its name, change the value from"1"
(or"2"
, etc.) to"0"
- (Or delete the lines entirely, but you'll need to pay attention to commas; each line must end in a comma except the last one in the flags list.)
Some flags you should not change (though it won't really break anything):
"location": "daughterhouse"
"map_daughterhouse": "1"
"travelto": "daughterhouse"
Save the file. Now the game thinks you haven't been in the house at all. You might even end up with duplicates of some of the items/XP/Meat you can get inside.
Trivia
- This entire location is a play on a collection of old jokes where a traveler is warned to stay away from the farmer's daughter, she turns out to be gorgeous, and the traveler has to defend himself as she throws herself at him in lust.
- If you destroy the house by looking at the daughter, a stone slab remains in its place.
- If you look at the father & daughter after taking the towel, though, there are two slabs instead of one.
- Scary Stories for Spooky Children, found in another Gray County location, has a reference to this place.
