Talking to the fly kid in the Monster Shack

Quests

You find Paul Phlemberg in his barn, miniaturized and trapped inside a device with a glass door. Releasing him and taking Flyman's chest hair allows you to complete one of the Monster Shack quests.

Short version: To complete the quest and leave him happy, set BODY to Fly, HEAD to Phlemberg, and LUNGS to Phlemberg. (The other two don't matter much.) Then open the door.

Barn

You must first talk to Phlemberg through the door. Then you can access his machine, featuring five levers that change him in different ways:

  • BODY: Changes Phlemberg's torso to a human body or a fly body.
  • HEAD: Gives him a fly head or his normal head. With a fly head, his speech (if any) is limited to shouting "BUZZ!"
  • LUNGS: Phlemberg is unable to speak with fly lungs.
  • PITUITARY: Switches him between fly size and human size.
  • HAT: The presence or absence of his hat seems to make no difference other than visual.

You can speak with Phlemberg through the glass again to see his reaction to the current settings. It's possible to change settings and check on him again as many times as you like.

Opening the glass door releases him whether he is pleased with his current form or not. Once he is released, there is no way to make changes again.

Flyman's chest hair

The possible outcomes are:

  • Fly body, human head
    • With human lungs, Phlemberg is happy. He gladly hands over a chest hair, and you get 40 XP.
    • If he has fly lungs, he is upset about his inability to speak. You take a chest hair and he leaves.
  • Human body, human head
    • If Phlemberg is human size, he prevents you from opening the door.
    • If fly size, he complains if able, then storms out of the barn after you pluck a chest hair from him.
  • Fly head, human size
    • Phlemberg remains in the barn, flailing aggressively. You can fight and defeat him for the chest hair.
  • Fly head, fly size
    • You get Phlemberg (fly body) or Phlemberg the fly-headed homunculus (human body) as a familiar. You also take a chest hair.
    • His capabilities as a familiar are improved if his lungs and body match.
    • Oddly, he keeps his hat, regardless of the HAT setting you chose.
