When you arrive you see several mining machines. Explaining their purpose to your companion gives you the Minesplainer perk.

Items

The pile of loose boards (with a hammer and handful of nails) can be made into a crate that yields some random mining supplies

Meat or nuggets from the mine cart.
A pickaxe is located at the far end of the mine.
