Alphonse Gator is a gator companion in Shadows over Loathing.
Personality
Alphonse has an aggressive demeanor, but has a keen smell for shadows, especially shadow taints. He has a soft side, but that tends to get covered by his rather angry and short tone.
Recruiting
With a shadow item equipped/carried or at least a level in Shadow Taint, Alphonse may randomly appear during the wander event in The Big Moist. He will force himself inside if you allow him to, making him a potential companion.
Abilities
At random occasion during wander event, he will give you a shadow item, more often a food than a one-time item. This happens more frequently at Government Valley, where shadow are more present here.
He will often experience a skill increase on his own, or an improvement on either physical or spooky defense.
Combat
Companion Vignettes
First vignette
- Randomly in The Big Moist, he will request to leave the player for a moment after smelling his nemesis nearby. You will take control of Alphonse as he followed over to Abner's Lair, encountering Abner. You will need to beat Abner, Abner's son and Abner's daughter to win this Vignette without any other aid. Upon defeating him, Alphonse will return with his nemesis' sunglasses, which he will don for the remainder of the game over his patched eye. Alphonse's Moxie increases by 1.
- Clearing this vignette will grant you the ability to let Alphonse rush at the President and devour her at Epilogue. However, this does not count for the companion ending.
Second vignette
- Also randomly in The Big Moist, he will request to leave the player for a moment as he wants to check his family. Again, you will take control of him as he returned to Alphonse's Hovel, his home... only to realize something was clearly very wrong with his family:
- His daughter flailing uncontrollably, whining randomly
- His son chewing on random things, which is shown as he is chewing on a random shorts. Alphonse's Moxie increases by 1.
- His mate... looking furious and calling him a useless gator.
- Thereafter he left, noting they are crazy as he would call it.
Notes
- Alphonse is the only companion that has a skill dealing spooky damage.
